The Origins of Technine Snowboards: Colorado, 1994

In the world of snowboarding, some brands simply manufacture boards and bindings, while others help shape an entire culture. Technine Snowboards belongs firmly in the second category.

Founded in 1994 in Avon, Colorado, the American brand became one of the most recognizable names in freestyle snowboarding thanks to its independent identity, technical innovation, and deep connection to skateboarding, hip-hop culture, and street riding. More than thirty years later, Technine continues to represent a vision of snowboarding built around creativity, freedom of movement, and individuality.

Technine's story began at a time when snowboarding was still defining its technical and cultural identity. The company initially focused on bindings, paying particular attention to baseless binding designs intended to create a more direct connection between snowboard boots and the board.

The goal was to improve board feel, control, and freedom of flex, essential characteristics for freestyle riders. Among the figures historically associated with the brand is Ethan Stone Fortier, better known as E-Stone, a photographer deeply connected to the American snowboarding scene.

Between the late 1990s and early 2000s, snowboarding underwent a radical transformation. Alongside traditional competitions, a new generation of riders emerged, focusing on rails, boxes, urban features, and tricks directly influenced by skateboarding.

Technine became one of the brands representing this evolution, standing out through bold graphics, oversized clothing, hip-hop influences, and an independent approach to the sport.

During the early 2000s, Technine progressively expanded its product range to include snowboards designed for jibbing, park riding, and freestyle progression. This philosophy continues to influence modern freestyle and all-mountain snowboarding.

MFM, Lucas Magoon and the Street Culture That Changed Snowboarding

A fundamental part of Technine's legacy comes from the riders who helped build its identity. Mark Frank Montoya, widely known as MFM, is one of the most influential personalities associated with the brand's history. His style, heavily inspired by skateboarding and urban culture, helped redefine the image of freestyle snowboarding.

Alongside him, riders such as Lucas Magoon, Chris Bradshaw, Simon Chamberlain, Travis Kennedy, and Dylan Thompson contributed, at different times and in different ways, to the development of creative and individual riding styles through video parts, signature products, and independent snowboard productions.

To truly understand Technine, it is necessary to look beyond the mountains. The brand developed within an environment strongly influenced by skateboarding, hip-hop music, and the streetwear culture of the 1990s.

These influences are reflected in snowboard graphics, clothing, and the way riders approach snow-covered terrain. Urban rails, improvised spots, stair sets, and architectural features became part of a creative language that brought snowboarding closer to skateboarding. The city itself became a playground for personal expression, where almost any obstacle could inspire a new line or trick.

Technine helped establish the visual identity of this movement through distinctive graphics and an approach that challenged traditional winter sports conventions. Snowboarding was no longer defined exclusively by competition results, but increasingly by style, photography, music, creativity, and individuality.

This combination made Technine a cultural reference point for riders who grew up surrounded by snowboarding, skateboarding, and streetwear. These three worlds share a philosophy based on freedom, personal expression, and constant progression.

Technine Innovation: Baseless Bindings, Freestyle Snowboards and Thirty Years of Progression

Behind its distinctive street-inspired image, Technine has consistently focused on technical development. From early baseless bindings to subsequent developments in toe straps, highbacks, and binding systems, the brand has explored ways to balance power transmission, support, and freedom of movement.

Among the technologies developed throughout its history is Split Base Technology, designed to allow the snowboard to flex more naturally beneath the bindings. This philosophy addresses one of the essential requirements of freestyle snowboarding: equipment should support a rider's movements without restricting creativity.

Choosing the right snowboard bindings remains essential when building a setup that matches individual riding preferences. A more flexible binding can make certain jibbing and freestyle movements easier, while a more supportive construction may provide additional precision and responsiveness at higher speeds. Boot compatibility, snowboard flex, and preferred terrain should always be considered together rather than selecting each component independently.

Technine snowboard construction also reflects this pursuit of balance. Recent collections feature Full Twin and Directional Twin shapes, Power Tech Core constructions, Radial sidecuts, Extruded TT 1500 bases, and different carbon reinforcement configurations.

Models such as The Camrock and The Wassup emphasize freestyle and jibbing, while boards including The Joint, The Enforcer, and The Split T offer different combinations of versatility, pop, and control for park, groomed runs, and all-mountain riding.

Technical characteristics vary between models and should always be evaluated according to a rider's ability, preferred terrain, and riding style. Understanding these differences is essential when choosing a snowboard that offers the right combination of maneuverability, stability, and responsiveness.

In 2024, Technine celebrated its thirtieth anniversary with the Dirty Thirty project, paying tribute to the brand's origins and distinctive visual heritage. Historic graphics and references to earlier collections were reinterpreted through contemporary products, connecting the past with the present.

Subsequent collections have continued to reflect this identity, demonstrating how Technine remains connected to its roots while embracing technical evolution. For riders looking to find the right combination of equipment, the Pleasures Milano Snowboard Configurator offers a personalized approach to selecting a snowboard, bindings, and boots based on individual requirements.

Technine Today and Pleasures Milano: Snowboard Culture Since 1999

More than thirty years after its foundation, Technine remains an important name for anyone familiar with the history of freestyle snowboarding. Its significance extends beyond snowboard construction and binding innovations to its contribution to the development of street snowboarding and a recognizable cultural identity.

The brand's history demonstrates that a snowboard company can represent far more than a collection of products. It can become a cultural reference point, bringing together sport, music, art, photography, and personal style.

For us at Pleasures Milano, Technine represents an authentic part of the snowboard culture we grew up with. Since 1999, the year our store was founded, snowboarding, skateboarding, and streetwear have been inseparable elements of our identity.

We have experienced the evolution of freestyle snowboarding, changes in snowboard construction and binding technology, the growth of urban riding, and generations of snowboarders introducing new styles, technologies, and ways of approaching the mountains. This experience continues to guide our work and the selection of products we offer.

Our philosophy has remained consistent: selecting equipment with genuine technical characteristics, a distinctive identity, and a story worth telling. We do not evaluate a snowboard simply by its graphics or brand name. We consider its shape, profile, flex, construction, and intended use.

A snowboard designed primarily for jibbing does not meet the same requirements as a more supportive all-mountain board. The ideal setup is the one that allows each rider to express their personal style while maintaining control, comfort, and confidence on the snow.

Through our online snowboard shop, riders can explore snowboards, bindings, and technical equipment. Alternatively, visit our physical store at Via Gustavo Fara 7, Milan, Italy, where we continue to share our passion for snowboarding and skateboarding every day.

For Pleasures Milano, snowboarding has never been simply a sport or a product to sell. It is a culture we have shared since 1999, one that continues to evolve alongside the riders who keep it alive.

That is precisely why Technine's story deserves to be told. Some brands follow the evolution of snowboarding, while others help write its history. Technine is one of them.
