X Large Clothing: The Birth of a Global Streetwear Legend

X Large Clothing is one of the most important and revolutionary brands in the history of global streetwear. When discussing the true origins of 1990s urban fashion, Californian skateboarding, hip hop, and American street culture, X Large is one of those names that truly changed everything. We’re not just talking about a brand of T-shirts and hoodies, but a company that helped define the modern concept of streetwear as we know it today.

The brand was officially founded in 1991 in Los Angeles, specifically on Vermont Avenue, in the midst of an incredible historical moment for California. Skateboarding, surfing, graffiti, punk rock, and hip hop were all exploding simultaneously, creating a new urban culture completely different from the past.

Founders Adam Silverman and Eli Bonerz immediately realized that something was missing in the market. The two friends wanted to create a store and a brand that truly represented the street, without imitating classic American fashion. The idea was simple yet revolutionary: to blend workwear, skateboarding, music, and street culture into a single identity.

From that moment, X-Large was born, and in a very short time, the small Los Angeles shop became one of the most important hubs of American street culture.

Los Angeles in the 90s: Skateboarding and Underground Culture

To understand the importance of X-Large, one must understand what Los Angeles represented in the early 90s. The city was the absolute center of skateboarding, surf culture, and the new American hip-hop scene. Cultural evolution was in the air everywhere.

Skateboarding was changing rapidly, the baggy style was beginning to spread, and the younger generations were seeking a different way to dress compared to traditional fashion. X Large fit perfectly into this context, becoming a sort of creative laboratory for the entire California urban scene.

The brand’s first garments were extremely ahead of their time. Loose fits, minimalist yet highly recognizable designs, quality materials, and above all, a strong underground attitude. Everything felt authentic and natural.

The famous gorilla logo quickly became one of the absolute icons of global streetwear. Even today, that logo instantly represents the entire 90s Los Angeles skate and hip-hop aesthetic.

In the early years, X Large was worn with Carhartt workwear, Adidas Campus, Puma Suede, Vans, and huge baggy jeans. It was a real style born directly from the streets, from skaters and artists in the American underground scene.

Beastie Boys, music, and the brand’s global explosion

One of the most important moments in X-Large’s growth was undoubtedly its connection with the Beastie Boys. The trio consisting of MCA, Mike D, and Ad-Rock was instrumental in the brand’s global spread.

The Beastie Boys weren’t just a band but a true cultural icon capable of blending skateboarding, punk rock, hip-hop, and street culture in a completely natural way. Legendary albums like Licensed To Ill, Check Your Head, and Ill Communication influenced millions of young people around the world.

When the Beastie Boys started wearing X Large, the brand quickly exploded beyond California. American streetwear finally began to have a true global identity.

The incredible thing is that the relationship between the group and the brand truly stemmed from the same shared culture. It wasn’t artificially constructed marketing but friendship, skateboarding, music, and real life.

This allowed X Large to become one of the first truly authentic streetwear brands in modern history. Even today, countless contemporary brands draw direct inspiration from that aesthetic created in Los Angeles in the early ’90s.

The gorilla logo and the streetwear revolution

One of X Large’s most important elements was its ability to create a true visual identity without feeling forced. The gorilla logo quickly became one of the most iconic images in global street culture.

The brand drew inspiration from American workwear, West Coast graffiti, and Los Angeles skate culture. Everything was reinterpreted in an intelligent and creative way.

X Large’s collections were ironic, provocative, and far more profound than many fashion brands of the time. Eli Bonerz himself has always explained that X Large didn’t simply want to follow trends but to represent a true street mentality.

Over the years, the brand has continued to grow tremendously, opening stores in various parts of the world and directly influencing the birth of modern Japanese streetwear.

X Large and its strong connection to Japan

A very important part of X Large’s modern history involves Japan. As early as the 1990s, the brand became incredibly popular in Tokyo thanks to the Japanese streetwear scene’s interest in West Coast American culture.

The Japanese distributor B’s International immediately recognized the brand’s potential and contributed enormously to its spread across Asia. In 2008, Eli Bonerz officially decided to sell the brand to the very Japanese company that had been distributing X Large for years.

From that moment on, the brand entered a new phase while keeping its original American identity alive. Even today, X Large remains extremely strong, especially in Japan, where the brand is considered a true icon of historic streetwear.

Many young people even think that X Large is a Japanese brand precisely because the brand’s presence in Asia has grown massive over the years.

The important thing is that despite the change in ownership, the brand has kept its original aesthetic and connection to skateboarding, music, and street culture intact.

X Large Today: Global Streetwear and Authentic Culture

Even today, X Large remains one of the most respected brands on the international streetwear scene. The brand keeps the original 90s aesthetic alive, reinterpreting it in a modern way without losing credibility.

T-shirts, hoodies, varsity jackets, pants, and accessories continue to carry that original Los Angeles vibe that made the brand legendary.

X Large remains one of the absolute cornerstones of global streetwear. Many modern brands exist precisely because of the path paved by historic brands like this one.
