Mens Hoodies: Oversized, Skate & Zip Up Hoodies Since 1999

Men's Hoodies are one of the most important pieces of modern streetwear. They aren't just garments designed for cold weather or leisure time. A sweatshirt can represent identity, a sense of belonging, personal style, and urban culture. From the skate scenes of the 1980s to contemporary streetwear, hoodies have become an integral part of the daily wardrobe for millions of people.

In the world of skateboarding and streetwear, hoodies have always played a fundamental role. It protects you from the cold during skatepark sessions, accompanies you on days in the city, and allows you to create comfortable outfits without losing your personality. Today, men’s hoodies come in hundreds of different styles: oversized, loose fit, zip-up hoodies, minimalist hoodies, crewnecks, with bold prints or clean logos.

A men’s hoodie is not just a technical or athletic garment. Over the years, it has become a symbol of global urban culture. Hip hop, skateboarding, punk, graffiti, underground, and street culture have transformed this garment into one of the most iconic pieces in contemporary fashion.

At Pleasures Milano, we’ve been curating men’s hoodies since 1999. We live this culture every day and select only pieces that truly make sense in daily life. We examine the fit, the weight of the cotton, the quality of the stitching, the construction of the hood, and the product’s actual durability. A men’s hoodie must look good but also be durable, functional, and comfortable to wear every day.

Men’s Hoodies: The History of Hooded Sweatshirts

The word “felpa” is Italian, while the term “hoodie” originates from the Anglo-Saxon world and derives from the word “hood,” meaning cap. The origins of this garment, however, are much older than modern streetwear.

As early as the Middle Ages, hooded tunics were worn by monks and laborers to protect themselves from the cold, rain, and wind. The hood became a practical and functional solution, especially in northern European regions where the climate was harsh for much of the year.

Over the centuries, the concept of hooded clothing continued to evolve until the 1930s in the United States. In New York, the Champion brand began producing the first modern hoodies intended for workers operating in cold environments. Thus was born the first true men’s hooded sweatshirt in contemporary history.

These early hoodies were designed to provide warmth, comfort, and freedom of movement. Success came quickly because the garment was practical, durable, and much more versatile than other workwear of the time.

In the years that followed, the hoodie slowly began to move beyond the world of work and into sports, American universities, and later urban culture. From a simple technical garment, it gradually transformed into one of the main symbols of casual and streetwear fashion.

Hoodies: The Boom in the 70s, 80s, and 90s

The true global success of the hooded sweatshirt came between the 1970s and 1990s. During that period, the world was undergoing massive cultural transformations. New music scenes, underground movements, and urban cultures were emerging that would forever change the way new generations dressed.

In the 1970s, American hip-hop culture began to take root in the neighborhoods of New York. Breakdancing, graffiti, rap, and street culture brought the hoodie into the spotlight. Men’s hoodies became the symbol of a generation that wanted to stand out from traditional fashion.

Hollywood also contributed enormously to the success of hoodies. Films like Rocky made the hoodie a global icon. The image of the athlete training in a gray hoodie became immortal and helped transform this garment into a symbol of strength, sacrifice, and determination.

In the 1980s, the phenomenon exploded even further. Skateboarders, surfers, rappers, and street youth began wearing oversized hoodies, hoodies with prints, and sweatshirts with increasingly large logos. Modern streetwear was being born right then and there.

The 1990s, however, marked the absolute boom. Men’s hoodies went viral worldwide. All brands began producing hoodies with massive graphics, loose fits, and increasingly elaborate designs. Skateboarding grew globally, and hoodies became an integral part of contemporary urban culture.

Mens Hoodies: A Symbol of Street Culture

With the arrival of the 2000s, the men’s sweatshirt definitively became one of the most popular garments in the world. It was no longer just a sports or work hoodie. Streetwear hoodies, skate hoodies, fashion hoodies, minimalist hoodies, and luxury styles emerged.

For years, the hoodie was also a symbol of nonconformity. In England, especially in the early 2000s, hoodies were often associated with troubled youth, skaters, and street kids. In some stores, it was even forbidden to enter with the hood up.

This strong rebellious element, however, helped make the hoodie even more significant within urban culture. New generations began to see the hoodie as a symbol of freedom, independence, and belonging to street culture.

Today, the discourse surrounding the hoodie has completely shifted. Hoodies have entered every facet of contemporary fashion. They are worn by skaters, artists, musicians, and streetwear enthusiasts worldwide.

The strength of a modern men’s hoodie lies precisely in its ability to adapt to different contexts. It can be technical, minimalist, aggressive, sporty, or elegant depending on the fit, construction, and brand that produces it.

Skate hoodies: the style of skateboarding

In the world of skateboarding, the men’s hoodie has always been essential. Skaters have been wearing hoodies and sweatshirts extensively since the 1980s. A sweatshirt protects against the cold during sessions, allows freedom of movement, and offers a unique sense of comfort.

In the 1990s, with the global explosion of skateboarding, many brands began producing skate hoodies with iconic graphics, bold logos, and increasingly loose fits. The prints were colorful, provocative, and strongly linked to American underground culture.

Men’s skate hoodies can have completely different constructions. Some are slim fit, others loose fit or oversized. You can find minimalist hoodies with small logos or hoodies with large front prints and massive back prints.

The hood also varies greatly from brand to brand. Some models focus on more technical and heavy constructions, others on light and soft silhouettes. The weight of the cotton, the quality of the cuffs, and the structure of the sweatshirt make a huge difference in the final fit.

For a skater, a sweatshirt isn’t just about fashion. It’s a garment meant to be worn. It must withstand wear and tear, friction, falls, and daily use. That’s why the best skate brands produce sturdy, comfortable hoodies built to last.

Graphic hoodies with large front prints and oversized back graphics became essential within skate and street culture during the 90s and 2000s.

Men’s zip-up hoodies, crewnecks, and oversized hoodies

Today’s market offers a vast array of different styles. Men’s hoodies aren’t all the same, and each model caters to different aesthetic and practical needs.

The classic men’s hoodie remains the most iconic style. It’s versatile, comfortable, and perfect for everyday urban life. The hoodie can be simple or heavily graphic, with a regular or oversized fit.

Mens zip up hoodies are one of the most versatile pieces for layering. They help manage temperatures and create more dynamic outfits during transitional seasons. Zip-up hoodies allow you to better manage temperatures and outfits, making them perfect for transitional seasons. A men’s zip-up hoodie can be worn open over a T-shirt or zipped up under a technical jacket.

Crewneck sweatshirts also continue to be hugely popular. Crewneck sweatshirts have a cleaner, more minimalist look than hoodies and are often used in simpler, more minimalist outfits.

In recent years, men’s oversized hoodies have become central to contemporary streetwear fashion. Dropped shoulders, loose volumes, and relaxed fits allow for the creation of silhouettes that are much more natural and consistent with modern skate culture.

Thrasher Sweatshirt: A Streetwear Icon

Among the most iconic hoodies, Thrasher sweatshirts certainly stand out. The historic San Francisco skateboarding magazine has, over time, become one of the most recognizable symbols of global skate culture.

Thrasher men’s sweatshirts have enjoyed enormous success thanks to their bold and instantly recognizable graphics. From the classic flame logo to the historic magazine logo, every hoodie represents an important piece of American skate culture.

Today, Thrasher hoodies are worn not only by skaters but also by musicians, artists, and streetwear enthusiasts around the world. The brand’s strength lies precisely in its authenticity: Thrasher was born out of skate culture and continues to represent it to this day.

In our store, you’ll find classic Thrasher sweatshirts, oversized hoodies, hooded styles, crewnecks, and numerous historic graphic variations. Every piece retains that strong underground identity that has made the brand timeless.

Hoodies and streetwear in Milan: the story of Pleasures

Pleasures Milano has been immersed in streetwear and skateboarding culture since 1999. In the early 2000s, our store began selling a huge selection of men’s sweatshirts from the best international skate and streetwear brands.

Brands like Carhartt, Dickies, Volcom, and many others began developing increasingly sophisticated hoodies during those years, featuring different fits, technical constructions, and original details.

In 2002, our own brand, Aiko Death or Glory, was also launched. Aiko sweatshirts were characterized by sleeve prints, technical details, unique constructions, and designs that were very bold for the time.

The brand spread rapidly in Milan and subsequently to other Italian and European cities. Germany, the Netherlands, Sydney, and Hong Kong were just some of the places where Aiko managed to make an impact.

Designed by art director Niko Stumpo and produced by Pleasures Milano, the brand quickly became a staple in the Italian underground streetwear scene of the early 2000s.

How to Wear Hoodies Today

Today, the men’s sweatshirt is one of the easiest pieces to style. A hoodie can serve as the centerpiece of an outfit or as a base to build upon through layering and different combinations.

An oversized men’s sweatshirt pairs perfectly with cargo pants, baggy jeans, carpenter pants, and skate shoes. This type of outfit directly evokes 90s skate culture and continues to dominate contemporary streetwear today.

Men’s zip-up hoodies work very well over loose-fitting T-shirts or under workwear jackets and coach jackets. An open hoodie allows you to create more dynamic and layered outfits. Minimalist crew-neck hoodies, on the other hand, are perfect for cleaner looks. They can be paired with loose-fit denim, chinos, or shorts while always maintaining a consistent urban aesthetic.

Color also plays a key role. Black, gray, and washed hoodies remain the most versatile, while hoodies with large prints often become the focal point of the entire outfit.

To create a balanced look, it’s important to balance the proportions. An oversized hoodie works best with loose-fitting pants and chunky sneakers. A regular-fit hoodie, on the other hand, can be used in simpler, more streamlined outfits.

Oversized Hoodies and Modern Fits

In recent years, the concept of the men’s hoodie has changed profoundly. Contemporary streetwear no longer focuses solely on the hoodie’s logo or graphics, but rather on the fit, proportions, and overall silhouette of the outfit. For this reason, oversized men’s hoodies have become one of the most important pieces in modern urban fashion.

An oversized hoodie isn’t simply about buying a larger size. The best streetwear and skate brands design their hoodies with specific constructions: dropped shoulders, wider sleeves, a roomy body, and a relaxed fit. This type of construction creates a much more natural, comfortable look that aligns with contemporary skate aesthetics.

The weight of the cotton also plays a key role. Heavyweight hoodies offer a more premium feel, hold their shape better over time, and create cleaner lines when worn. Lightweight hoodies, on the other hand, are softer and better suited for layering and transitional seasons.

In the world of skate and streetwear, the fit is achieved through the balance between different pieces. An oversized men’s hoodie works perfectly with baggy jeans, cargo pants, carpenter pants, and chunky skate shoes. This type of silhouette stems directly from 90s skate culture and continues to influence much of the global streetwear scene today.

Today, a modern men’s hoodie must be comfortable, durable, and feature a well-thought-out fit. It is precisely the construction of the fit that often distinguishes a simple hoodie from a true, high-quality streetwear piece.
